Men’s Category 4/5

Our Philosophy
The principle behind our 4/5 squad is that it is a team for everyone. You’ll find first-time racers who are just beginning to love the sport, part-time racers who race only for the love of racing and ride for the love of riding, dedicated athletes ascendant into the ranks of the Cat 1/2/3 squads, and junior racers fast developing with the guidance of experienced riders.

QCW Cycling is an all-inclusive developmental club dedicated to helping everyone fall in love with bicycle racing and become skilled, winning riders. The 4/5 squad is where they start.

Over the history of QCW Cycling, and particularly in the past few years, the 4/5 squad has graduated dozens of riders to the Cat 1/2/3 squads. The club’s culture breeds loyalty; these riders are still with QCW winning elite races across Pennsylvania and beyond. All while the 4/5 squad continues to cultivate our future stars.

2010 Season in Review
Aaron Schelegle began his second racing year with a bang, winning the Blueberry Circuit Race while teammate Tom Waltz took 4th. Aaron continued with another win and two more top-5 finishes before graduating to the Cat 3 ranks while simultaneously balancing the demands of medical school and racing.

Newcomer Eric Poeltl had a tremendous season; he arrived mid-summer from Penn’s collegiate team and took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at the Ronde Van Mullica, New Bethlehem Criterium, and Liberty Criterium respectively and upgraded to Cat 3. The 4/5 squad’s misfortune is the Cat 3 squad’s gain, as Eric is sure to upgrade in 2011.

Meurig James arrived from England this spring as a Cat 4 and added an international flavor to the squad while showing us typical Euro class by winning the Claymont Classic, Tour of Colt’s Neck, and two races at the Clark’s Summit Criterium, along with three other top-five finishes. Needless to say, Meurig is now a Cat 2.

Paul Cunningham began the season as an 18-year-old kid with a bike that didn’t fit, a thick ski cap under his helmet on winter rides and no racing experience at all. He quickly grew into an accomplished rider; taking a 2nd, 4th and several top-ten finishes early in the season.

2011 and Beyond
For 2011, the 4/5 squad aims to do more of the same: share the joy of racing and develop the skills and strengths needed to be successful cyclists, racers, and leaders. There are already several Cat 4 riders who will undoubtedly be graduating to Cat 3 in 2011, and several first-year Cat 5 riders who have caught the racing fever and will make the leap to Cat 4 next year. Weekly group rides, skills clinics, and team bonding are all on the table to help the squad grow as one.

We also already have several new riders signed up for 2011, with more to follow. Some have solo racing experience and will grow from the camaraderie and tactics that come with team racing; others have no experience at all and will learn to love the sport as the rest of us do. Many or most of them will graduate to the 1/2/3 squads in coming years, and our goal is to enable their advancement.
